What is SIP?
SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. It’s the signaling standard for Voice-over-IP (VoIP). SIP is an open standard which allows the carrier voice network to interoperate seamlessly with customer premise equipment. The voice channel established between them is a SIP Trunk.

What is a SIP trunk?
A SIP trunk is a call that is routed over the IP backbone of a carrier using VoIP technology. SIP trunks are used by IP-enabled PBX's and are rapidly replacing traditional PRI or analog circuits because of their cost savings and reliability.

What is a PBX?
PBX stands for Private Branch eXchange. It’s a telephone system that serves a particular business or office.

What is PRI?
PRI stands for primary rate interface. It’s a telecommunications standard for carrying multiple voice and data transmissions between two physical locations.

How do SIP trunks compare to PRIs?
SIP trunks generally cost less than PRIs (typically $20 to $25 per trunk for unlimited inbound and local calling with a long distance rate that can be under 2 cents per call). Also, SIP trunks can be purchased in increments of 1, whereas PRIs have to be purchased in increments of 23 channels.

What is POTS service?
POTS stands for "Plain Old Telephone Service". It’s the analog service that most residences and small businesses still use.

What are the advantages of SIP Trunks over POTS?
SIP trunks are cheaper (approximately $20 to $25 per trunk) than analog circuits (approximately $40 per circuit). In addition, long distance termination charges associated with SIP trunks are much cheaper than traditional analog rates.

When should a business use a SIP Trunk instead of hosted?
A business should look into purchasing SIP trunks when they have grown large enough to need their own PBX. Because a SIP trunk can serve the needs of multiple employees while a hosted seat is needed for each employee, it usually costs less overall, although it requires a large upfront investment.

Will I need more Internet connectivity when I buy SIP trunks?
Depending on the number of SIP trunks purchased, and the amount of excess Internet connectivity, you may need to purchase more Internet access. However, it's important to know that when a SIP trunk is not being used, the bandwidth otherwise allocated to a SIP Trunk is freed up for use in less intensive applications, such as e-mail and general web use. If you would like more reliability, Endstream offers private network access that will ensure higher call quality than what can be achieved over the public Internet.
